Public high school students in the State of Maryland need one fine arts credit (two semesters) for graduation. Any class below may be applied to this requirement. These courses are open to all students, although some courses may have prerequisites. Unless otherwise indicated, all are full-year (two-semester) courses, and students may not take semester 2 (B) without having taken the semester 1 (A) course.
Entry level courses -- grades 9-12: (These are pre-requisites for advanced study in the Fine Arts Strand of the Media Literacy Academy.)
Foundations of Art A & B -- (formerly known as Fundamentals of Art) – This is a one-semester course. Focus is on making two-dimensional art, looking at art from different times and cultures, studying Master Artists and exploring career options. A basic overview of processes and media in the visual arts.

Ceramics and Sculpture 1 A & B -- Study of the making of 3-dimensional sculpture and fine crafts in a variety of media with particular focus on clay.

Art and Culture A/B (#6454/6455) -- Explore the world of art through the eyes of various cultures!!! Through hands-on projects and textbook assignments, students study the visual designs found in our environment with a focus on cultural influences and social significance. Crafts, decorative arts, environmental designs, design in commerce and industry as well as fine art are analyzed. The role of art in society and the contributions of minority artists are also studied. This course is open to all students grade 9-12 and can be taken either semester or for the entire year.

Digital Art 1 A & B - Focus on the use of the computer as an art medium for creating portraits, illustrations, commercial/advertising art, and animations. Students discuss ethical and safety issues in the use of computers.

Photography 1 A & B - Students learn how to use a camera, process film, and print black-and-white photographs. Several theme projects are assigned through which students demonstrate their sensitivity to subject matter, lighting, form, and composition. Fee.

Advanced Coursework in Visual Arts - grades 10-12:
Studio 1 A & B –Focus is on observational drawing and painting as well as other 2-D art forms such as printmaking and bookmaking. Students study master artists, art movements and contemporary art. Fee.
