New Courses in the Fine Arts Department for Fall 2008

in the Music Department:

The Business of Music (#6891)
one-semester course that can be taken either semester!

This is a MCPS pilot course taught only at Montgomery Blair!!! Students will study the art, production and business of music. They will learn basic copyright law as it pertains to music, explore opportunities for creating entrepreneurial ventures in music and identify and investigate careers that support the music industry. The impact of the digital age on the music business will also be analyzed. Hands-on projects, research and class discussions will enable students to gain a clearer understanding and appreciation of the processes involved in the music industry.

This course is aligned with both the media literacy and the entrepreneurship academies and is open to any student in grades 10-12 who is interested in learning about all aspects of the music business. Students will have the opportunity to learn the basics of recording in Blair’s new state-of-the-art recording studio and the basics of music production in our state-of-the-art piano lab. This is available as an elective credit.

Art and Culture A/B (#6454/6455)
Fine Arts Credit
open to all students grade 9-12
can be taken either semester or for the entire year

Explore the world of art through the eyes of various cultures!!! Through hands-on projects and textbook assignments, students study the visual designs found in our environment with a focus on cultural influences and social significance. Crafts, decorative arts, environmental designs, design in commerce and industry as well as fine art are analyzed. The role of art in society and the contribution of minority artists are also studied.
